How to Make Your Home Reflect You
Fashion, art, and automobiles were recently on display at the St. Louis Art Museum in an exhibit titled Roaring – as you might guess- all from the roaring 1920’s. Walking through this, I saw opulence and luxury. I was inspired by the glamorous lifestyles they portrayed. You might not realize it but there is a reason why clothing, art and cars are all in the same exhibit. Interior Design belongs in the same circle! Are you curious why, read on!
Roaring Exhibition at The St. Louis Art Museum
So, how exactly do these creative industries overlap? In the twenties, automobiles were newer to the scene. Designers of fashion and interiors were being recruited to help design the interior finishes of these new vehicles. Can you imagine a Savvy Design interior in your car? We love the idea! In the early 20th century, the goal was not only to elevate the design of a vehicle, but also to appeal more to women. And from there, fashion was forever changed. Women needed a different style of dress to be able to drive and ride in automobiles. The Art Deco style, the use of sleek materials, predominant jewel tones, and geometric patterns, were all making their mark for years to come. The key element to all of this was art, it is expressive, visionary and imaginative.
As for me, an interior designer, I find inspiration everywhere and in everything. Bringing it all together to create a home that reflects your personality is what I do best! Maybe you like art, fashion or automobiles. How is that reflected in your home design? They all exude luxury and function – not to mention – a list of gorgeous details! If you feel inspired by the 1920’s, let’s dive into how we can incorporate the inspiration from the Roaring art exhibit into a design plan.
Fashion
From the rich, jewel tones to rich velvet fabrics, the styles I saw from the 20’s were classic with flair. Sometimes it is a geometric pattern on a blouse or a chic black dress with a little train. In the home, this may be a long navy velvet drape or a tufted classic chesterfield sofa with a geometric throw pillow. Check out the parallels between 1920s fashion and these great room designs.

Automobiles
Automobiles can be sleek, elegant and dramatic, luxurious and so much more. The movement in the body of a car can be the inspiration for or inspired by architectural details. This master bedroom surely falls into that category. The saturated walls create a moody vibe. And let’s take a moment for the materials. The sheen of the brass bed frame, the geometric bedding, and the leather accent chair complete the picture with style. If this bedroom were a vehicle, it would have to be a luxury sports car!
Classic Art
Classic art never goes out of style. The art from the 20’s was vast. One of my favorites of that era was Georgia O’Keefe who is known for her abstract nature paintings, in particular, her florals. These classics influence linens and artwork today. Framing a beautiful scarf or textile adds individuality and unique style to a space.

Whether you love and appreciate art, fashion, or automobiles a design professional will help put the pieces together to create a one of a kind space.
