Design Build: Next Steps
A design-build project is an adventure. There are countless decisions to make, details to consider and possibilities to explore - but with the right team, the experience can be as exciting and enjoyable as the finished home itself.
So, what happens after the exterior of your new home has been designed?
By this point, we have reviewed the overall vision and collaborated closely with the architect. The exterior design & interior floor plans are complete, the architectural drawings are underway, and the contractor has been engaged.
Now, we are ready to jump into the interior!
The next step is the schematic design phase. This is where we begin defining the look, feel and personality of the home.
While the architectural plans establish the structure of the home, schematic design considers the form and function of the interior spaces. We focus on your lifestyle, family dynamics and overall likes and dislikes. Sometimes schematic design feels a little like a first date. On second thought, it may be more like a first, second and third date!
We will ask a lot of questions, exchange stories and learn how you want to experience your home. We talk about your routines, the way you entertain and the spaces where you naturally love to be the most.
We will also look at colors, materials, furnishings and interior architectural details you love - as well as the ones you would prefer not to see in your home. I always tell clients, what you dislike is as important as what you truly love!
As we learn more about you, we begin translating those conversations into a cohesive design direction. We will share mood boards, materials, and photos to dive even deeper into your preferences. What we learn in these meetings drive our design inspiration.
This is a very collaborative process. The goal is not to finalize every selection immediately. Instead, we identify the ideas that resonate most strongly and create a thoughtful foundation for the detailed design work ahead.
