Design Misconceptions
There are a lot of design misconceptions out there, and we are here to challenge them! Design trends are not always the right fit for you or your home. Outdated ‘rules’ can actually hold you back from creating the home of your dreams. Here are a few of the most common challenges we help clients overcome:
Here are my top five:
1. Neutrals are boring, you must have color.
Neutrals are not boring when used correctly. A layered neutral color palette that is rich in texture and contrast carries a lot of dimension and creates interest in a space. Different materials and finishes build depth and I think neutrals are elegant and inviting.
2. We cannot update our home until our kids are older.
This is one of the biggest untruths we hear regularly. Today’s fabrics and finishes are designed to perform. With thoughtful selections your home can be beautiful and functional, while being durable. We create spaces that stand up to kids and pets, but are still big on style. It’s ok for your home to look lived in!
3. Dark colors make a room feel smaller.
I think dark colors can be very misunderstood. Darker tones, especially on a ceiling can add depth and make a room feel more expansive. ( I think white is the worst ceiling color!) Dark colors also create drama while being moody and inviting. I encourage clients not to be afraid to give it a try.
4. Everything needs to match.
The most beautiful interiors are layered and interesting. Mixing finishes and fabrics and even styles creates unique visual interest. Matching is not the goal, coordinating is!
